Cancer chancer sent to prison

A CALLOUS conwoman who fooled her fiance into giving her £300,000 by pretending she was dying of cancer has been jailed.

Anne Marie McKeown, 40, conned Ewan Cameron for more than two years by telling him she had been struck down with the deadly disease.

The twisted fraudster even had fake surgical scars tattooed on her body, borrowed a colostomy bag and recruited a pal to dress up as a nurse and push her around in a wheelchair as she continued her sick fantasy.

But while he spent a fortune paying her non-existent medical bills, she was cheating on him and spending his cash on high living with a secret lover.

She even used Mr Cameron's money to buy a love nest with her other boyfriend, James Brown, 44.

Sick McKeown was only caught when Brown blew the whistle on her after discovering she was ripping him off too.

But at Hamilton Sheriff Court McKeown, of Scotstoun, Glasgow, was jailed by Sheriff Joyce Powrie for 32 months for the astonishing scam.

McKeown met Mr Cameron, 39, through a lonely hearts column.

Although he worked as a lorry driver, she soon found out that he had trust funds from relatives and was a very wealthy man.

Shortly after they started dating in 2001, Ewan paid £3000 for McKeown to have cosmetic surgery on her breasts.

He then proposed and she said yes. But just before they went on holiday to Gran Canaria together, she broke the news that she was suffering from bowel cancer and only had six months to live.

During the holiday, McKeown spent much of her time weeping and saying things like: "Why me? I'm so young."

McKeown preyed on Mr Cameron, of Uddingston, Lanarkshire, between October 2001 and December 2003.

The relationship with eventually ended and McKeown thought she had got off scot-free.

But in February 2004, Brown found out she had been running up debts in his name.

Furious, he phoned Mr Cameron and told him about the scam.

She was originally charged with obtaining £500,000 from Ewan by fraud but pled guilty to ripping off £300,000 earlier this month.

Mark Moir QC, defending, asked for leniency to be shown to McKeown because she had entered an early guilty plea.

He added: "She is a vulnerable woman with suicidal thoughts. She comes from a decent back ground and has been brought up well

"She took part in this scheme and benefited from it but felt intimidated and obliged to continue.

"Given the magnitude and complexity of this offence she understands custody is an only option."

Jailing McKeown, who shook uncontrollably while in the dock, Sheriff Powrie said: "This was such a serious offence conducted over a considerably long period that I see no suitable alternative than to impose custody."

Ewan Cameron has since moved to Inverness where he is happily married to his wife Susan.

The couple have a one-year-old son, Fraser.

He said: "I'm glad she's behind bars."
