Footballer leaves widow fortune

Phil O\\\'Donnell

TRAGIC Motherwell captain Phil O'Donnell left a £1.5M fortune after his death.

The former Celtic and Scotland footballer left his entire estate to his widow Eileen, 35.

His will revealed he had made plans in June 2006 for his estate to be left to his wife in the event of his death.

But it also shows the 35-year-old and Mrs O'Donnell had made arrangements for a trust to be set up for their four children in the event of both of them passing away.

Phil left a total fortune of £1,532,263.36, with the bulk of his estate being made up of property and insurance policies.

A half share of his massive family villa in his home town of Hamilton, Lanarkshire, was valued at £400,000.

And a further share in two properties he owned in the town were valued at £57,500 and £40,000 respectively.

His will also reveals the ex-Parkhead hero had shares in Celtic, the club he supported as a boy, totalling just £27.

His luxury Range Rover car was also shown his will to be value at £30,000.

Last night a Motherwell FC source told how Phil's death still casts a shadow over the club where was known as 'Uncle Phil'.

The source added: "Phil had done well out of football. The size of his will shows that.

"But he was never flash or anything like that and only ever had the well being of his children uppermost in his thoughts.

"He did have a nice car and a nice house, but no one would grudge a guy like Phil the finer things. He was so well loved.

"But no amount of money will ever help ease the heartache of him being gone. Nothing can ever change that.

"Phil's death still has a massive influence over this club. The players, a lot of whom were very young, rarely talk about it and never discuss it with outsiders.

"It's still very raw."

O'Donnell's death on December 29 last year sparked a massive outpouring of grief.

A shrine made up of scarves and football shirts was made by heartbroken fans of all clubs in his honour outside Motherwell's Fir Park Stadium.

A post mortem later revealed Phil had died from after suffering left ventricular failure of the heart.

Later this month a host of famous football faces will pay tribute to O'Donnell in a charity football match at Celtic Park.

Henrik Larsson will return to Glasgow to play in the reunion of the 1998 title-winning Celtic team who will play against a Motherwell select on May 25.

He will be joined by Paul Lambert, Jackie McNamara, Morten Wieghorst, Craig Burley, Stephane Mahe and Alan Stubbs.

Motherwell's side for the match at Parkhead will include Dougie Arnott, Stevie Kirk and Chris McCart and will be managed by Tommy McLean.

Celtic will be bossed by Wim Jansen, the Dutchman who steered them to league success that year.
