AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after a man died in police custody just two hours after being arrested.
Dad-of-one Martin Jamieson was taken to a police station on the night of the Champions League final after being arrested in Bellshill, Lanarkshire.
Two police officers then drove Martin, 40, to Coatbridge Police station where he was put in custody.
But just two hours after his initial contact with police Martin was found dead in his cell.
His devastated family were told that he was discovered by police officers and that he died after becoming ill in his cell.
Now his family are demanding answers as to why he was not monitored.
Martin, who was due at his friend's house to watch the football match between Manchester United and Chelsea, was stopped by police officers in Main Street, Bellshill on May 21.
James Jamieson, 48, Martin's brother, said his family had been left shocked at his death.
He said: "I was at home when my other brother came round to my house saying that Martin was dead.
"I went with back with him and the police officers explained the situation to me.
"They said he had been drunk when he was lifted and had apparently been ill in his cell and choked.
"I couldn't believe it. They told me had been arrested because he was drunk but Martin never drank.
"If he was in such a state you would think they would monitor him all the more than usual in case he fell ill.
"Then later a woman told me she had seen him walking down the street with blood on his face, as if he had had a fall but the police said he had no visible sign of injury.
"She said he was doubled over in pain. It doesn't make sense."
A post mortem on Martin was carried out on Thursday but the results proved inconclusive.
Further blood tests will now be taken in a bid to find out the cause of death.
A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said a report on Martin's death will now be sent to the procurator fiscal.
James Jamieson added: "I think it's a disgrace that someone can die in the cells and no one knows.
"Why wasn't anyone checking on him?
"I have so many questions. I don't know why he was there in the first place, he should have been on his way to his friend's house to watch the final.
"I just want to know the truth and find out exactly how he died."
